Canning House was delighted to welcome the Deputy Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Nick Clegg to 15 Belgrave Square this morning at a private briefing for Canning Circle members. The Deputy Prime Minister travelled to Latin America in February and was at Canning House to give his reflections on his visits to Mexico and Colombia where he was accompanied by a considerable delegation of British businesses. Clegg was keen to stress that his personal view is perfectly aligned to Canning House’s message that there is enormous current opportunity to grow the UK’s relationship with the region on a commercial and political basis. Whilst admitting that “one visit doesn’t change the weather,” the Deputy Prime Minister stated that he hopes that his visit confirms the commitment of this government and hopefully, future governments, to strengthening our relations with Latin America.
During the Q&A session Canning Circle members were able to pose questions which were directly related to their interests in the region. Topics which were touched upon included the peace process in Colombia, energy reforms in Mexico, immigration and the role of British expertise in developing financial services and securing investments in the region.
Canning House would like to thank the Deputy Prime Minister for his time and for speaking so frankly and optimistically about the future of UK – Latin American relations.
