The United Kingdom has joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. In the first of a new series of Canning House Business Breakfasts, we welcome Graham Zebedee, Chief Negotiator for UK accession to CPTPP at the Department for Business and Trade.

On 25 June, more than 5 million voters participated in the first round of Guatemala’s 2023 General Election. The runoff, between Sandra Torres and her unexpected rival Bernardo Arévalo, took place on 20 August. As predicted by most polls, Arévalo won 58% of the votes to Torres’s 37%. He still needs to be formally proclaimed president-elect to take office in January 2024.

Voters in Ecuador went to the polls in an unprecedented snap election on 20 August. Almost 11 million voters participated in the first round of Ecuador’s presidential and legislative elections. To win in the first round, a presidential candidate needed 50% of the valid votes, or 40% with a 10-point lead over the second-place. As neither candidate won more than 50% of the ballot, Luisa González, from Citizen Revolution Movement (33.63%), will face Daniel Noboa from National Democratic Action Alliance (23.43%) in a run-off election on 15 October.
