This report applies a form of scenario planning to Colombia over the next decade. It notes the strategic and economic importance of the country within Latin America, as the number three both in population size (48.3m in 2013) and by the value of its GDP (US$378.1bn, also in 2013)1.

Executive Summary

It also highlights the current paradox: almost uniquely among all its neighbours, Colombia has suffered half a century of continuous and violent internal conflict, with large segments of the national territory controlled by rebel forces. Yet that has not made it an economic ‘basket case’: on the contrary, in recent years Colombia has been a regional outperformer. Its economic growth rate com- fortably exceeds the Latin American average.
