On Thursday 1 December, Canning House and Anglo American partnered for a conference exploring the Evolution of Responsible Mining in Latin America.
Held at Anglo American's offices in central London, we hosted an audience including industry leaders, parliamentarians and government officials, and media and civil society representatives.
Jeremy Browne, CEO of Canning House, kicked off proceedings with brief opening words, welcoming the audience and our two panels of expert speakers, and thanking Anglo American for their partnership.
The evening's first panel, Mining for a Greener Future, was chaired by Anglo American's Head of Government Relations and Political Risk, Richard Morgan. Richard was joined on stage by Prof. Paul Ekins, from UCL's Institute for Sustainable Resources; Christian Spano from ICMM; and Ros Lund from the Department for International Trade. The four engaged in a wide-ranging discussion, encompassing sustainable development, stakeholder participation and the energy transition.
Our second panel, Social Risks and Opportunities in Mining, brought together Jon Samuel, Anglo American's Group Head for Responsible Business Partnerships; Ana Carolina Salomão from Pogust Goodhead; Philipa Varris from Horizonte Minerals plc; and Silvio Lima from Appian Capital Advisory. This panel discussed the risks and opportunities of ever-increasing demand for minerals; COP27, Loss and Damage and water stress; and investors' perspectives on ESG.
Questions from our highly engaged audience addressed topics including due diligence, legacy and resilience; power balance and independent intermediation; UK government monitoring of British companies' mining practices; and the effects of climate change.
Canning House again thanks Anglo American for its partnership, and our audience for their interest.
