Anna McMorrin MP talks Latin America with the Diplomatic Corps

On Wednesday 1 November, Canning House welcomed Anna McMorrin MP, Shadow Minister for Latin America and the Caribbean, for an Ambassadors’ Breakfast.

Attended by Latin American Ambassadors and members of the LAC diplomatic corps in London, the breakfast provided a unique opportunity for the Shadow Minister to speak with the senior representatives of countries from across Latin America about a potential new Labour government’s vision for British foreign and development policy, Latin America and the Caribbean as a region, and diplomatic engagement more broadly.

McMorrin, who took up her Shadow Ministerial role for Latin America and the Caribbean in September 2023, hailed the region’s “pivotal and essential place in the world” in her remarks, which covered topics ranging from the detailed workings of her team working on Latin America, to the broad concepts defining the global foreign policy of a future Labour administration.

The floor then opened to questions and comments from attending Ambassadors and diplomats. The ensuing discussion addressed the UK’s present and future approach to and view on Chinese engagement with Latin America; the Mercosur trade bloc and a potential UK-Mercosur trade deal; and dialogue focused on social and climate justice.
