The economic downturn and the impact of Operation “Car Wash” has created opportunities for investment in distressed assets in Brazil. Canning House is pleased to welcome two partners from a leading Brazilian law firm to discuss which sectors of the Brazilian economy present opportunities for investment in distressed assets and what investors should take into consideration from a compliance perspective, including how the UK Bribery Act and local anticorruption laws are currently being enforced in Brazil.

  • José Augusto Martins, Partner at Trench, Rossi e Watanabe Advogados

José Augusto Martins joined the Firm in 1999 and became a partner in 2001. Chambers & Partners has recognized him as a "leading practitioner with experience in structured finance transactions." Prior to joining Trench, Rossi e Watanabe Advogados, Mr. Martins advised Brazilian and foreign banks on a wide range of banking and capital markets activities, and represented banks and project sponsors in domestic and international financing for infrastructure projects. He also managed the legal department of the Brazilian subsidiary of an international bank. Mr. Martins focuses on banking and finance law, corporate law, agreements, mergers, acquisitions, capital markets and project finance. He has extensive experience representing lenders and borrowers in domestic and international finance transactions.

  • Luís Alberto Laboissière Ambrósio, Partner at Trench, Rossi e Watanabe Advogados

Luís Alberto Laboissière Ambrósio is one of the partners of the Firm’s banking and finance practice. A well regarded and accomplished finance lawyer, Mr. Ambrósio’s practice focuses primarily on debt finance and debt capital markets though he has extensive experience in all areas of finance including syndicated lending, acquisition financing, infrastructure finance, debt restructuring and general banking law. Mr. Ambrósio has taken a lead role in various seminal cases, including in the first major successful debt restructuring under the new Brazilian insolvency regime advising the largest financial creditor and the first bond issuance aimed at retail investors in the Brazilian local capital markets by a multilateral organization, and frequently represents banks and financial corporations in high profile matters. Mr. Ambrósio concentrates on lending transactions, debt capital markets, project finance and debt restructuring.
