Elections in Guatemala
On 25 June, Guatemala will hold its 2023 General Election, voting for a new President, 160 representatives in its Congress, the Central American Parliament (20 deputies), and 340 municipal Mayors and Councillors.
When voters head to the polls they will be faced with more than 20 candidates to replace current President Alejandro Giammattei, who is constitutionally prevented from seeking a second term. So far, the Electoral Tribunal has rejected four candidates. Polls suggest a divided electorate and a polarised scenario with no clear frontrunner. Since 1995, every Guatemalan presidential election has gone to a contested runoff. If no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff will be held on August 27.
