The Speakers

John Crabtree is a research associate at the Latin American Centre in the University of Oxford where he has taught for many years. He has written, lectured and broadcast extensively on the politics of the Andean countries, chiefly Peru and Bolivia. His works include Peru: Elite Power and Political Capture (Zed Books, 2017) and his forthcoming work Mining and the Peruvian State: Social and Environmental Sustainability.

Paulo Drinot is a historian of Latin America, especially Peru. He is currently Professor of Latin American History at the Institute of the Americas, University College London. He has published extensively on the economic, social, political and cultural history of Peru. His publications include a monograph on prostitution, venereal disease and state formation in Peru, c. 1850-1950, La condena de la libertad: De Túpac Amaru II al bicentenario peruano en seis ensayos y un colofón, and a book on Peru in the 1920s and the dictatorship of Augusto B. Leguía.

Luis Oganes is a Managing Director and Head of Global Macro Research. He manages the strategy teams that cover Rates, Currencies, Commodities and Emerging Markets Research. Luis joined J.P. Morgan in 1997 in New York and currently works in London. On several occasions, he has participated in advisory projects with governments and quasi-sovereign entities in Latin America, the Middle East and Asia. Luis obtained his PhD in Economics from New York University in 1998 and his BA in Economics from Universidad de Lima in 1990.
