Following the first round of the Chilean elections, on 16 November, Canning House has assembled an expert panel to analyse the results.

Chileans will go to the polls on November 16, 2025, to elect their next president, along with 23 senators and 155 members of parliament.

If no candidate secures the absolute majority in the first round, a presidential runoff will take place on December 14. The race between Jeannette Jara, José Antonio Kast, and Evelyn Matthei is shaping up to be highly competitive.

The Speakers

GlobalSource Partners’ Chile Political Analyst Dr. Robert Funk is one of Chile’s leading political scientists. He also currently teaches political science at the Faculty of Government of the University of Chile. Previously, he served as Executive Director of Plural, a think tank dedicated to promoting democratic reform in Chile. His research specialities include democratisation, the presidency as an institution, and the political elite in Latin America.

Carlos Malamud is Senior Fellow for Latin America at the Elcano Royal Institute, and Professor of Latin American History at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED), Madrid, Spain. He is a Corresponding Member of the National Academy of History of Argentina. He currently combines his work as a historian with his role as a political and international relations analyst focused on Latin America.

Fiona has wide experience of Latin America, both as a diplomat and now through her work in the private sector. Fiona was the UK´s Ambassador to Chile from 2014 to 2018; and then Regional Ambassador, Latin America and Caribbean, COP26. She is also a Distinguished Fellow of RUSI (Royal United Services Institute). Fiona is a Senior Advisor to Appian Capital Advisory.
