Canning House will be hosting a webinar before the Bolivian Presidential Election. Following the first round of elections in August, two candidates from the right are set to face off. Senator Rodrigo Paz Pereira and former president Jorge 'Tuto' Quiroga will both be bidding to become the first president in 20 years from outside the incumbent MAS party.
Our panel of political analysts will discuss the candidates' plans and the possible futures for Bolivia.
Speakers
Jonas Wolff is professor of political science with a focus on transformation studies and Latin America at Goethe University Frankfurt as well as executive board member and head of the research department “Intrastate Conflict” at the Peace Research Institute Frankfurt (PRIF). His research focuses on the transformation of political orders, contentious politics, political violence, international democracy promotion, and Latin American politics.
John Crabtree is a research associate at the Latin American Centre in the University of Oxford where he has taught for many years. He is also a former senior member of Saint Antony’s College. He has written, lectured and broadcast extensively on the politics of the Andean countries, chiefly Peru and Bolivia.
Luciana is a sociologist from the Universidad Mayor de San Simón (UMSS), holding a Master’s degree in Political Science from FLACSO Ecuador, and currently a PhD candidate in Political and Social Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). Her research focuses on state configurations, power dynamics, feminisms, collective action, and political conflict.
Alejo Rivas is a Strategist at Balanz and is responsible for the firm’s coverage of Ecuador, Bolivia, as well as credit and local strategy across Latam. Before joining Balanz he was Director of Financing Strategy in Argentina’s Ministry of Economy, and a Board Director at Banco Hipotecario. He has also been a consultant at the World Bank.
Aiko Ikemura Amaral is a Lecturer in International Development at King’s College London. Her research has explored the intersections of race, class, gender, and urbanisation in Latin America, focusing on the mobility and labour of Bolivian market women in Brazil and Bolivia, the racialisation and politicisation of indigeneity, and the links between urbanisation and food security in Brazil.
Moderator
Laurence is a distinguished Senior Research Fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford University. In 2005/6 he was the Acting Warden of the College and in 2011/2 he served as the Senior Proctor of the University. He specialises in the international aspects of democratisation and the relationship to economic liberalisation, particularly within Latin America
