Casting Alloy: Forging Latin America’s Role in the Energy Transition

  • Anglo American, 17 Charterhouse Street, London, EC1N 6RA
  • 16:00 - 18:45 + networking

Canning House, in partnership with Anglo American and Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, is hosting the fourth edition of its Annual Mining Conference, taking place on the sidelines of Resourcing Tomorrow. This flagship event brings together mining leaders, investors, policymakers, legal experts, and international organisations for a multilateral dialogue on Latin America’s pivotal role in supplying the minerals essential to global growth, the energy transition and the digital economy.

Latin America remains a cornerstone of the global mining landscape. Chile and Peru continue to be among the world’s largest copper producers, playing a vital role in supplying this critical metal essential for electrification, renewable energy technologies and artificial intelligence. Meanwhile, Argentina is emerging as a key player, with new pro-business policies driving investment to unlock its vast, untapped reserves of copper and lithium. Meanwhile, Brazil’s abundant iron ore resources—including Anglo American’s Minas-Rio operation—are fundamental to global steel production and the growing market for green steel.

As the UK and Europe pursue their ambitious green transition goals, increased investment is crucial to expand Latin America’s critical mineral production. However, scaling output alone isn’t enough—effective collaboration between governments and industry to develop regulatory frameworks and innovative technologies is equally crucial to ensure sustainable mining practices and long-term benefits for local communities.

With Brazil’s leadership of COP30 as a backdrop, this year’s conference will explore how Latin America can meet global demand for critical minerals including iron ore and copper while advancing climate and nature-positive commitments. Discussions will include the role of emerging technologies such as hydrogen, AI, and automation, supply chain resilience, and the partnerships across industry and governments needed to drive sustainable growth across the region through expert panels and a high-level fireside chat.
