Canning House convened a panel of expert speakers to discuss the ongoing situation in Venezuela following the capture of President Nicolás Maduro.
The speakers considered what these developments mean for Latin America, and what this tells us about President Trump's 'Don-roe Doctrine'.

Ryan C. Berg is director of the Americas Program and head of the Future of Venezuela Initiative at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. His research focuses on U.S.-Latin America relations, strategic competition and defense policy, authoritarian regimes, armed conflict and transnational organized crime, and trade and development issues. Previously, Dr. Berg was a research fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, as well as visiting research fellow at the University of Oxford’s Changing Character of War Programme.
Phil has been Crisis Group’s senior analyst for the Andes region since 2015. He researches and produces Crisis Group policy materials and conducts advocacy, focusing primarily on the political situation in Venezuela. Previously, he was a correspondent for The Economist for fifteen years. He specialises in the politics of Venezuela and conflict resolution.
Mariano is an Associate Fellow for the Latin America Programme and Conflict, Security and Development, where he supports the definition of strategic ideas and initiatives for the Programme. He also researches and writes on crucial developments concerning Latin America and the Caribbean, including the impact of geopolitics, political developments and risk, security and foreign policy, transnational crime and regional cooperation.
