Demand for African Slaves: The Role of New Christians from Rio de Janeiro
In 2019 Canning House and King’s College London launched a new Visiting Fellowship. The aim of the Fellowship is to provide an opportunity for Latin American academics to enrich their research using the extensive Canning House Library Collection, housed at King’s College London.
In January 2021, we welcomed Elissa Pereira dos Santos, a Doctoral student at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, to London to research how New Christian merchants - Jews who converted to Christianity to avoid the Inquisition - integrated into the 18th century economic and social hierarchies in Brazil and Portugal via the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans, using data mining techniques to track this change over time through the historic works of the Library collection. At this event, she delivered a lecture on her findings.
