27/05/2021 - ​Lasso takes over reins of power in Ecuador

Ecuador moved definitively to the right of the political spectrum on 24 May when Guillermo Lasso, a conservative former banker, was inaugurated as head of state. Lasso, however, was far less interested in the shift in ideology under his presidency than in what he described as the transit from authoritarianism to democracy. “The time of the caudillos is over,” he declared emphatically in his inaugural speech. In a sign of his determination to expunge what he portrayed as the baleful legacy of the Citizens’ Revolution of former president Rafael Correa (2007-2017), Lasso immediately moved to repeal a contentious communications law regulating the media, and issued a decree establishing a strict official code of ethics.
