14/10/2021 - Mexico and US seal broad-brush security alliance
The Mexican and US governments launched a much-trumpeted new alliance this week which will endeavour to go beyond shared security concerns to embrace a diffuse collection of tangentially related issues. The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, hailed a “new chapter” in bilateral security cooperation, while Mexico’s Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard maintained that the alliance was unprecedented and betokened “a partnership that is superior, qualitatively speaking”. Only time will tell how much substance lies beneath the rhetoric, but at first blush the new Bicentennial Framework on Security, Public Health, and Safe Communities looks less original than portrayed, while containing a number of good intentions modelled on the ‘abrazos no balazos’ approach advocated by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
