Canning House CEO Robert Capurro welcomed and introduced Ms Segal and the Council of the Americas, the nearest US equivalent of Canning House.

Ms Segal then delivered a presentation on the upcoming election season in Latin America, with a focus on Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, and on the Venezuelan crisis.

While the results of the elections remain unpredictable at this stage, Ms Segal highlighted the issues that she sees as shaping them, including corruption and impunity, low or stagnant growth rates, security and violence, and social media.

On Venezuela, Ms Segal cited statistics painting a picture of the situation in the country, and considered the potential impact of US, EU and Latin American sanctions.

During the Q&A part of the evening, the topics of Cuba's role in the Venezuelan dilemma, of Nafta's impact on the upcoming Mexican election, and of the relationship between the US government and its Latin American counterparts more generally were all broached, thanks to a range of insightful questions from the audience.
