This course has been specifically tailored for Spanish speakers. It is an accelerated combination of our first two standard levels. Upon completion of this course, most students can expect to progess to our third tier course - Lower Intermediate.

 

The topics for this course are: first contact around -  name, nationality, occupation, address. Numbers, days of the week, months, arranging time and place, transport, day-to-day activities, invitations, eating and drinking, past information. Hotel reservations, orientation in the city, daily routine, the Brazilian calendar.

 

You will know how to greet and introduce yourself and other people and to ask and give personal information,  tell the time, talk about daily activities, make plans, order food and drinks, ask for information and talk about past activities. You will talk about the daily routine, express wishes, preferences and doubts, to confirm something/to complain, ask for directions/location, to give advice, to define and identify things, to express contentment, to compare and contrast.

Grammar: Alphabet, personal/possessive/demonstrative pronouns, main prepositions, modal verbs (main ones), present simple, nouns: masculine/feminine, plural/singular, immediate future, simple past. Prepositions of place, imperative form, possessive pronouns: dele, dela, more plural nouns, more adjectives, irregular verbs, present continuous, comparative, further work on the past tense.

For those new to the language with no experience, this course will give you the basics - how to introduce yourself, numbers, the alphabet, pronuciation, directions, ordering, shopping, verbs in the present and simple past. More detailed syllabus available here.

15 May - 17 July 2013 (Calendar) ENROL

This course will introduce more sophisticated structures/vocabulary. With a strong focus on Portuguese for the work place, students will learn techniques for report writing, briefings, presentations, interviews and problem solving. Students will also engage in debates and discussions on more complex topics such as Brazilian economic issues and politics whilst revising and consolidating advanced grammar and vocabulary.
